For the first time since .states. (2001), choreographer Arco Renz returns to the stage with a solo performed by himself. 1001 is conceived in close collaboration with the Taiwanese experimental filmmaker Tony Wu. Wu has shown his works at renowned art institutes, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the San Francisco Cinematheque and the Fine Arts Museum in his hometown Taipei. His work is an ongoing exploration of images (8mm and 16mm films, photos, digital imaging) in states of metamorphosis as they move through different formats and technologies.

Composer Marc Appart and lighting designer Jan Maertens once again collaborate closely on the creation. The title 1001 is a double reference: on the one hand it refers to the digital building stones 0 and 1, icons of contemporary life. On the other hand 1001 refers to dreams and tales from a marvelous world afar, ultimately pointing at the legendary Tales of 1001 Nights. 1001 operates on the border between "Here and Now" and the illusion, the projection. It confronts a man's physical body with his world of imagination. Tony Wu and Arco Renz create a series of 16mm films, composed of "abandoned light" and 8mm footage. The projections create the performance space and contemplate the transitory nature of memories.
