o.T. (the emotionality of the jaw)

Ian Kaler

We define our bodies by their physical limits. But we rarely stop to ask why this is. Ian Kaler aims to broaden our understanding of physicality through his artistic confrontation with social norms and power relations. With o.T (ohne titel), Kaler offers a series of works exploring different physical and mental states. In part one, o.T. (the emotionality of the jaw), he blurs our perception of the boundaries of the body with a pulsating, rhythmic flow of movement. As the relationship between time and space becomes ambiguous, the body falls “out of focus”. Working with musicians Aquarian Jugs (aka Planningtorock’s Jam Rostron) and Houeida Hedfi, Kaler creates a space where bodies and figures liquify, melting into each other and the music; a “non-solo” which asks, how big or small does a movement have to be to open us to the possibility of a new “I”?
