In Cry Jailolo seven young Indonesian dancers deliver a powerful message of hope and optimism concerning the survival of coral reefs. Jailolo, situated on one of Indonesia’s Maluku Islands, is known as one of the greatest diving spots in the world, however, its natural beauty is also under threat of disappearing due to climate change. Eko Supriyanto, probably the most influential Indonesian dancer / choreographer of his generation, became fascinated by both the local community and the marine life found in and around Jailolo, and drew inspiration from his experience there to develop this new creation. He calls it a performance of ‘silent tourism’. Compelling rhythms leading a menacing soundtrack are alternated with expressive solos: as beautiful and as rich as coral life itself.
