Eko Supriyanto is one of the most influential dancers / choreographer from Indonesia. With his background in Javanese court dances and Indonesian martial arts, his performances are a flawless blend of traditional and contemporary dance movements. His work has been shown in festivals across Asia, Europe and America. For Balabala he is working with five expressive dancers from Maluku. With slow, rhythmic movement patterns they create a piercing depiction of strength. They each strive to carve a space for women in which potential and creation are central. Inspired by the nine directions of the Pencak Silat (martial arts) philosophy, the dancers express the different roles of women in Indonesia. A powerful performance with a powerful female (dance) force.
The performances Cry Jailolo & Balabala are part of Europalia Indonesia
