05.11 Teun Verbruggen trio

Teun Verbruggen first picked up the drums by the age of eight. After two summer courses with drummer Dre Pallemaerts he went to the Conservatory of Brussels where he was taught by Hans Van Oosterhout. Since graduating from this school in 1999, he became one of the most in demand sideman in lots of different bands and musical styles in no time.

Born in Belgium in 1975, saxophonist Bruno Vansina has flourished within the Flemish creative music community, finding diverse outlets for his music -- ranging from Gil Evans-inspired large ensemble jazz to skewed and even zany art rock -- as both bandleader and collaborator. A Frank Zappa fan in high school, Vansina began the serious pursuit of a career as a jazz saxophonist while a teenager, immersing himself in recordings by the titans of the instrument, from Lester Young to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, and Ornette Coleman. In the mid-'90s Vansina began conservatory studies, both at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he met and began a longstanding collaborative relationship with drummer Teun Verbruggen, and the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Netherlands, where he was taught by tenor saxophonist/clarinetist John Ruocco. The alto saxophone would often become Vansina's instrument of choice in his recordings and performances over the years, although he also plays soprano and baritone as well as clarinet and flute.

3.12 Kalaha

Last year they headlined STUK EINDFEEST, now Kalaha are back at STUKcafé!

What kind of music would emerge if you combined a pair of renowned Danish electronic producers with two of the most exciting jazz musicians around? This was the question in the minds of the Copenhagen Strøm Festival curators. The answer? It arrived in the form of Scandinavian electro pioneers Rumpistol and Spejderrobot—two prominent characters with a reputation well beyond their home countries—along with guitarist Niclas Knudsen and drummer/percussionist Emil de Waal.

These four talented strangers, introduced with minimal rehearsal time, were brought together and launched onstage, and KALAHA was born. A daring experiment to say the least. From the spontaneous and infectious magic of their first show came their critically acclaimed debut album “Hahaha”, the sound taking its inspiration in equal parts from West-African funk, electro rave and jazz improvisation, standing up as best possible blending of musical worlds—highly energetic and expressive, triggering the listener to dance with the head just as much as the heart.

8.10 Drifter

Featuring long time friends Alexi Tuomarila (piano), Teun Verbruggen (drums) and Axel Gilain(bass). A quartet who, under the original name of Alexi Tuomarila Quartet, achieved global success 10 years ago. Flow marks the return of the quartet, fusing the youthful energy and vibrancy of ten years ago with the experience of a decade’s touring.

With echoes of Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet, the writing on Flow is vibrant, distinctive and highly original, combining hypnotic riffs, absorbing melodies with elegant improvised piano phrases from Tuomarila, intertwined with Kummert and Gilain's haunting vocal chants and virtuosic, harmonically rich saxophone solos.

"There is a quiet intensity and unhurried poise to Tuomarila’s playing and that of tenor saxist Nicolas Kummert” - BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE
