Sylvain Chauveau: Find What You Love And Let It Kill You

Elsewhere #8: Sylvain Chauveau + Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch

The French-born Sylvain Chauveau has already charmed us with his minimal compositions for acoustical instruments, electronica and vocals on several of his albums released on labels such as Fatcat, Type, Brocoli,… and in his collaborations like On (with Steve Hess), O (with Joël Merah and Stéphane Garin) and Arca (with Joan Cambon). In August 2017 he released his new album Post-Everything, containing more song-based material, in which he “oscillates wildly from glitching shoegaze pop, tender acoustic guitars and David Sylvian-esque ambient pop in the 3rd and final part of his current album cycle" (review by Boomkat). It is the third and last part of a trilogy in which Chauveau aimed to deconstruct the traditional format of the pop song.

The French Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch studied classical piano throughout her childhood and soon gained an interest in making her own music. After a move to London to pursue a BA course in music and working for the online electronic music store Bleep, Björk, Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto, Andy Stott, Clint Mansell and others were added to her list of influences. In recent years she wrote several highly praised soundtracks for (short) films. With her debut Like Water Through The Sand in 2015 she gained her place among artists such as Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hauschka and Dustin O’Halloran. She easily navigates between piano-driven music, string quartets and electronics, finding a subtle balance between chamber music, minimal and neo-classical.
