Love, beauty, poetry and David Bowie are at the heart of EVOL. The title is an anagram of LOVE and an abbreviation of ‘evolution’. EVOL is inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s Duino Elegies. Without words the dancers evoke poetry in its purest form, whereby they combine complex, technical shapes with free movements. Songs from David Bowie’s early works form the energetic, poppy soundtrack with lyrical undertones. The mystique and romance of Rilke’s angels and animals are reflected in Bowie’s surrealism. Yet familiarity and recognition also play a key role: Bowie’s music, known and loved by all, connects the personal memories of the audience to the stories told by the dancers on stage. Without being illustrative Claire Croizé merges these influences together into a powerful dance performance.
