Requiem pour L.
Under the direction of composer Fabrizio Cassol, fourteen musicians from different continents rework Mozart’s Requiem. They fuse the classical masterpiece with jazz, opera, popular African music, and more. How can you write a new story using existing works of oral and written traditions? Director and choreographer Alain Platel augments this modern interpretation by visually and physically translating the images and associations the requiem evokes: from the funeral hymn to the mass grave in which Mozart himself was dumped.
Cassol and Platel’s métissage creates a new universe. They previously worked together on Monteverdi’s Marian Vespers (vsprs, 2006), Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (pitié! 2008), and the Western baroque repertoire (Coup Fatal, 2014).
