RULE OF THREE

Jan Martens / GRIP

RULE OF THREE is a mix between a concert and a collection of short stories. The atmosphere of a nightclub is interwoven with a sense of getting lost between the pages of a book. Stillness and outbursts alternate, precision goes alongside meditation, reason alongside emotion. The rhythms, light and movement simultaneously swell, or at other times are dismantled. The show is full of contradictions, just as our times. For the first time Jan Martens is working with live music. The music of the American producer and drummer NAH bears traces of punk, noise and avant-garde jazz topped with restless hip-hop.

Jan Martens (°1984, België) studied at Fontys Dance Academy in Tilburg, and in 2006 he graduated in Dance at the Artesis Royal Conservatory in Antwerp. Since 2010 he has been making his own choreographic work, reaching an ever-growing national and international audience.

Jan Martens' work is fed by the conviction that every body can communicatie, every body has something to tell. His work is a sanctuary where the notion of time can be found back, where there is space for observation, emotion as well as reflection. In order to achieve this, he doesn't create his own movement language, but rather forms and reuses existing idioms in a different coherence, allowing new ideas to surface. Through the years, he has created performances like SWEAT BABY SWEAT (2011), VICTOR (2013), THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER (2014), ODE TO THE ATTEMPT (2014) and the project THE COMMON PEOPLE (2016). In September 2017 Jan Martens’ new creation RULE OF THREE will premiere, and it will be performed in STUK on January 23 and 24, 2018.

Jan Martens werd voor zijn werk bekroond met de Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds prijs Noord-Brabant (2014) en de prestigieuze Charlotte Köhlerprijs (2015).
