Tagfish [all great changes begin at the table]
BERLIN
A conference table.
Seven chairs.
Screens sitting round the table.
They talk to each other about finding a new use
for a once rich industrial area,
now a world heritage site:
a hotel, commissioned by a sheik.
Above or below ground.
Prestigious or economical.
Long or short term.
No shortage of questions.
Do you have a sense of humour when you're alone.
How deep does your property extend.
Tagfish tells the story of an area abandoned by industry,
which is looking to put its wasteland and empty industrial heritage to new
uses. One person having some ideas for the future development of the area
is sheik Hani Yamani. His eye fell on Zollverein, a UNESCO world heritage
site, as the place where he would realize his new dream. A property on a
world heritage site: an investment and a truly prestigious achievement.
Something that would make his counterparts sit up and take notice at the
next meeting where the purchases of the past year are discussed.
Six characters [vertically placed flat screens] on a long table on stage,
with six chairs, six glasses, a bottle of water, etc. Mechanics are
incorporated into the table, creating an interaction between the screens
and the table. A seventh chair is empty. Waiting for the sheik in the
hope that he shows up.
After two years of intensive international touring with the previous
projects of the Holocene cycle
[Jerusalem, Iqaluit,
Bonanza and Moscow], BERLIN starts a
second cycle with Tagfish: Horror
Vacui. A series of portraits at the table, composed
encounters.
