Ode to the attempt
Jan Martens is one of the most promising choreographers of the moment. His recent THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER garnered critical acclaim and a spot on the 2014 Theaterfestival.
‘Workouts for the mind, dressed in cheeky humor.’
That presentation comes later in the season, but in STUK START you already get a taster with Ode to the attempt. With this solo, Martens creates a collage-like self-portrait, a light-hearted and humorous deconstruction of the creative process. Ingeniously, Martens shares the challenges confronting a young choreographer: authenticity, manipulation, perfectionism, humour, melancholy ... all aspirations and feelings with which everyone is familiar, but which are heightened when confronted with yourself in the studio. A gem without crown, but with the intensity of a large jewel.
