Internship Production Sound

STUK is looking for a music-minded intern to support the production work of our concerts and sound art project from September 2024 to June 2025. You help with organising events, festivals and residencies, welcome our artists with open arms, and get a wide range of production tasks. A lot of Belgian and international artists are part of the sound programme and festivals such as STUK START, Kermis In De Hel, TakeOff UUR KULTUUR, Hear Here and STUK Eindfeest. The internship is a unique chance to get to know interesting artists and gain experience in the arts sector.

What is STUK?

STUK is a buzzing arts centre in the middle of Leuven, a house for dance, image & sound with international appeal. The building comprises multiple concert and theatre spaces, an exhibition hall, a cinema, a café and much more. From dance performances to concerts, from movies to exhibitions, STUK does it all. We also offer a multitude of festivals and contexts to present Belgian and international artists in the best possible way. Behind the scenes, there are a lot of residencies work and we support the production of new work.

Who are we looking for?

STUK is looking for a music-minded intern to support the production of our concerts and sound art projects from September 2024 to June 2025. The internship is spread out across the entire year, with quiet and busy periods. The season starts with STUK START (19 & 20 September 2024) and the most intense period is Hear Here (24 April to 9 June 2025). During the Christmas and Easter holiday, there is no programmation. No week is the same as the previous one, variety is guaranteed! We look for someone with an affinity for music and (sound) art who likes to roll up their sleeves and get things done. We expect a lot of availability in busy periods, including being free on concert days, doing preparatory work and working late (23:00). The internship is a unique opportunity to get to know interesting artists and gain experience in the cultural sector.

So who are we looking for specifically?

  • You have some affinity for the sound programme of STUK, or at least for music and (sound) art in general
  • You are a good communicator, can work independently and think practically
  • You have (preferably, not necessarily) some experience with organising events, parties or concerts, or have done volunteer work in the cultural or event sector
  • You are familiar with with digital tools like Gmail, Google Drive and social media (again, preferably but not necessarily)
  • You have a good knowledge of English, allowing you to communicate with non-Dutch-speaking artists. Speaking French and Dutch too is a plus.
  • You live in (or have a dorm in) Leuven
  • You have (preferably) a driving licence type B
  • You are available to work regularly on concert days, until late (23:00), and do preparatory work, from September 2024 to June 2025

What will you do?

The tasks are varied

  • You are responsible for the practical organisation of events and are expected to be present on every ‘concert day’. The days of your internship are directly linked to the sound programme, which will take shape in the coming months. Next to that, you will be asked to help with other, preparatory production tasks. The roster is flexible and can be discussed in consultation with the sound programmer.
  • You are the point of contact for artists and technicians: upon arrival, you guide the artists around the venue, backstage, artist kitchen and STUKcafé.
  • You offer practical and logistical support (e.g. making production sheets, keeping track of the guest list, picking up artists at the airport, booking hotels, taking care of hospitality, stage management, …)
  • You make the timetables for audience and artists
  • You follow up the volunteers (ticket scanners, bar, …) who support the events, in consultation with the volunteers coördinator.

STUK is looking for intern(s) for autumn 2024 to support the content development of the new dance festival Body of Work

In season 2024-2025, STUK will launch the first edition of Body of Work, a new festival for living dance heritage. This edition, Unfolding Phase, is built entirely around the performance Phase. Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker/Rosas (from 1982) and presents, besides dance performances, an expo, a film programme, lectures and debate, dance workshops, a music programme, a dance battle and much more.

For the content preparation of some projects in the festival, STUK is looking for (an) intern(s) for support! The main focus of the internship is in the autumn of 2024 (period September - December), with the possibility of extension until the festival period: 20 February to 9 March 2025.

What should you do concretely?

Based on your affinities, experience and availability, different tasks can be put together among different trainees. Some projects that will be developed in the period September - December and for which we are looking for support:

• Creating a collection of videos of performances and inspirations of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas to include in the gaming console Re.Dancing.
• Processing interviews with Rosas dancers about performing and passing on the performance Phase from generation to generation (including making transcriptions with the help of transcription software and selecting quotes for the expo).
• Editing work on supplied texts for an ABC of contemporary dance, which will be used for introductions during the festival (a.o. polishing texts, translating English texts into Dutch).
• Preparation of the reading and study corner that is part of the Unfolding Phase expo.


Who are we looking for?

• You have an interest in culture and art, the workings of STUK. Affinity with contemporary dance is a plus, but we are mainly looking for enthusiastic candidates with curiosity and a desire to learn.
• You are communicative, practical and can work independently: you see work and look for solutions to challenges when they arise.
• You work meticulously and have an eye for detail.
• You enjoy working with text and like inspired, clear language.
• You have a good knowledge of English.
• You are preferably familiar with digital tools such as Gmail and Google Drive.
• You are flexibly employable. An internship certainly does not have to be full-time. We will draw up a work schedule together depending on your availability. You are prepared to occasionally work evenings and weekends if required by the projects.

STUK is looking for intern(s) to provide production support for its annual dance operation and new dance festival Body of Work.

STUK annually presents about 40 dance performances in STUK's halls and on the stage of 30CC/Schouwburg, ranging from experimental young work to larger (international) productions. The performances are framed by introductions, post-screening talks and workshops. Behind the scenes, artists engage in research or work on their new productions. In season 2024 - 2025, STUK will also launch the first edition of Body of Work, a new festival for living dance heritage. The festival runs from 20 February to 9 March 2025 and is built entirely around the performance Fase. Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker/Rosas (from 1982). The festival includes dance performances, an expo, a film programme, lectures and debate, dance workshops, a music programme, dance battle and much more.



What should you do concretely?

Based on your affinities, experience and availability, different tasks can be put together and the assignments below can be divided among different trainees. The internship is not necessarily full-time.

The task package is very varied and may consist of the tasks below, in support of the programme and production staff:


Jaarwerking dans:

• (Preparatory) production tasks and administrative work related to the dance performances (including introductions and follow-up talks), residencies, workshops, etc.
• E.g. booking trips and hotels, following up registrations, keeping the guest list up to date, arranging hospitality, logistical organisation & signposting, ...
• Welcoming artists and their teams to STUK for performances and residencies
• Monitoring the volunteers who support the events, together with the volunteer coordinator
• Preparing the dance programme for the next season (requesting text and image material, technical sheets, etc.)
• Preparing and editing room texts together with the communications officer
...

Specifically for Body of Work (20.02 - 09.03.2025):


• Welcoming and supervising artists and workshop hosts during the festival
• Preparation and conversion of the various rooms for workshops, lectures, debates and performances
• Supporting the organisation of the Slow Walk in Leuven on 22.02 (http://www.mywalking.be/brussels/nl/)
• Building the expo (consisting of Rosas archive material, video work and a reading & study corner)
• Follow-up of the volunteers supporting the events, together with the volunteer coordinator

Who are we looking for?

• You have an interest in culture and arts, the functioning of STUK and affinity with the dance programme in particular.
• You preferably (but not necessarily) have some experience in organising (small) events, or have been involved in the past as a volunteer in the culture or event sector.
• You are communicative, practical and can work independently: you see work and look for solutions to challenges yourself when they arise.
• You are preferably (but not necessarily) familiar with digital tools such as Gmail and Google Drive
• You have a good knowledge of English so that you can communicate with non-Dutch-speaking companies and partners. French is a plus.
• You preferably have a type B driving licence.
• You live or are living in Leuven (not a must, but useful given the evening and weekend work).
• You are flexibly employable:

• You are prepared to work evenings and weekends in function of the planning of performances and projects

Public operation STUK

STUK is looking for a socially engaged intern with a passion for culture. During your audience development internship, you will help STUK open up its artistic operation to different target groups. This is done on the basis of two public cooperation projects: Louvain Vague and Pulse. Through these projects, we build a community that gets the chance to get to know the work of our artists up close and reflect on it with them.

Your tasks:


Organising events: Help our public relations officer organise Louvain Vague evenings and Pulse showcases.
• Community building
: Address new target groups and welcome participants during the events.
• Creative thinking
: Devise working forms and ways to stimulate substantive conversations during the tone moments and evenings.
• Practical support
: Assist with planning and follow up mail traffic.
• Share vision and ideas
: Share your vision and ideas to contribute to new tracks for audience engagement.

Internship Production Hear Here 2025

STUK is looking for an intern to support the production of the sound art exhibition Hear Here 2025, which will take place from 24 April to 9 June at various locations in Leuven. We are looking for someone who has a heart for sound art, visual art or music but is practical at the same time. You will help STUK prepare the expo, go on location visits, welcome the artists and receive a varied package of production tasks. This internship is an excellent opportunity to get to know interesting artists and gain experience in the cultural sector.

For your information, the previous edition of Hear Here was a great success with 25,000 visitors.


What is Hear Here?


Hear Here is a large expo of sound art at STUK and at locations in the city centre. In the form of a walk along various places in Leuven, such as churches, parks or empty buildings, the expo presents about 15 sound installations (artworks with sound). Thus, installations will sound in STUK, Dijlepark, Justus Lipsius Tower, KADOC Chapel, Hollands College, BAC ART LAB, Stadspark and Anatomical Theatre, among others. The expo features work by both Belgian and international sound artists. We aim at a broad audience of professionals, art connoisseurs and music lovers, as well as curious Leuven residents, families and schools. Hear Here will be the sound art expo of 2025.


Who are we looking for?


STUK is looking for an intern to support the production for 'Hear Here. The internship is spread over the period 1 March to 13 June 2025. You will start with the preparations for the expo and work during the set-up, expo period and dismantling. We are looking for someone with an affinity for sound art, visual art and/or music who also likes to roll up his/her sleeves and can think practically and is widely available during the period in question.

• you live or are living in student accommodation in Leuven

• you can take time off from 1 March to 13 June 2025 on a very regular basis (dates will be fixed according to planning and in mutual agreement)


What do you do?


The range of tasks is very varied:

• You will be responsible for the practical organisation and preparation of the expo (1 March to 24 March). This means: making appointments with artists and technicians, organising location visits, thinking about all kinds of practical issues, booking travels and hotels, making up info sheets, etc.
• You are available during the build-up, exhibition period and dismantling (approx. 24 March to 13 June). During this period, you will help monitor the set-up, you will be the contact point for artists and technicians, you will regularly check the installations and locations, draw up signs, follow up any damage cases, help organise the opening reception, live event, guided tours with artists, etc.

STUK is looking for an intern to support the guide coordination of the sound art exhibition 'Hear Here 2025', which takes place from 24 April to 9 June at various locations in Leuven. As an intern, you will support the public relations officer with the recruitment, planning and coordination of guides and guided tours. During the expo, you will be jointly responsible for the public mediation of challenging installations and artworks, you will help ensure the well-being of the guide team and you will assist where necessary.
