Van Manen/Cherkaoui
Drawing from his affinity with the Dutch choreographer Hans Van Manen, Sidi Larbi Cherkoaui has compiled a mixed bill for his first season at the Royal Ballet Flanders: Van Manen/Cherkaoui. Two generations of choreographers who both work from the qualities of an individual dancer and don’t work with narrative. So similar, and yet so different.
In Solo (1997) Van Manen developed a performance to Bach’s Violin Partita for three dancers, because the high tempo and abrupt movements made it impossible for just one dancer to perform it. In his iconic Four Schumann Pieces, a male soloist is shadowed, as it were, by five couples who embody his desires.
Faun, by Cherkaoui, offers an alternative perspective of the mythical solo from the celebrated ballet dancer Nijinsky, who meets his female counterpart. The evening will be concluded with a new performance by Cherkaoui with music from the contemporary composer Arvo Pärt.
