Studio CHAr is a Japanese non-for-profit architecture studio based in Tokyo. CHAr stands for Commons for Habitats and Architecture. With a strong social commitment, studio CHAr seeks innovative, and sometimes surprisingly simple, design solutions to complex challenges. Among other things, CHAr is known for their Mokuchin recipe, an opensource platform for renovation interventions. The series of proposals for small-scale interventions inspires and facilitates the renovation and revitalisation of mokuchin homes, wood-built flats built en masse after the war and now often in poor condition. With their manageable and process-oriented renovation manual, CHAr aims to avoid demolition and vacancy.
Partner Yutaro Muraji comes to Belgium to share how Studio CHAr are committed to social engagement as architects. He discusses how they come to their design solutions and how they hand off these design proposals so that homeowners and users can use them themselves. He offers insights into how architecture can contribute to sustainable and affordable renovations, where design and DIY meet in an open process. With their design proposals, CHAr focuses on restoring both the physical building and social cohesion in mokuchin neighbourhoods.
AUDITORIUM 24/25 – ARCHITECTING. Architecture as a process
Lecture series on architecture and urbanism
Curator: Hanne Van Reusel, Stad & Architectuur
When does architecture begin and does it ever end? Who participates, and how? Where does it go wrong? What role do improvisation and intuition play? And how can architecture rebel?
This lecture series explores architecture-in all its power and vulnerability-as an open and dynamic process. The focus is on the less visible aspects of practice, from idea to execution, and everything in between and beyond. Each of the guest speakers shares their vision and process in an unfiltered way, aiming to offer insights into the complexity and fragility of architectural work.
