A Wave

An ode to the iconic dance scenes of the Flemish Wave, performed by different generations of dancers.

In the 1980s, a wave of radical dance innovators emerged in Belgium. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus, Marc Vanrunxt and Alain Platel redefined the dance discipline. This ‘Flemish Wave’ still shapes how we move and watch dance today.

In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier returns to this legacy. Fifteen dancers from different Flemish generations share the stage: dancers from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, young performers, a dancer with disability from Platform K, and original cast members. They rework iconic scenes from the 1980s and 1990s, exploring what to carry forward and update. Above all, A Wave asks how canons can generate joy rather than obligation, and become the seed of a new wave.

In The Wave I want to confront a new generation of performers with the legacy of the emerging dance artists from the eighties and nineties. On stage there will be a mix of children, youngsters, young professionals of diverse profiles in terms of age, education, ability and background together with dancers that were once part of the repertoire pieces we’ll get inspired by. - Zoë Demoustier
