ABC of contemporary dance

A guide through the basics of contemporary dance and how to look at it.

With Fase, we celebrate an iconic performance from ‘contemporary dance’: a genre that is considered not so easily accessible. In our common understanding, ‘dance’ is quickly associated with virtuoso movements, tutus and synchronous group choreographies. Yet what is presented today as contemporary dance on the stages of art centers often bears little resemblance to that.

In this 30-minute ABC of contemporary dance, we aim to provide tools to confidently explore what contemporary dance has to offer today. Starting from some central figures and performances, (alternately) Tom De Moor and Jonas Rutgeerts outline the arc that dance as an art form has made since the early 20th century, from ‘modern dance’ to today's contemporary dance. Introducing some key concepts, they also provide signposts to fully experience the diversity of dance performances.
