Badke(remix)

A revival that transforms the Palestinian dance ‘dabke’ into a celebratory form of resistance.

The acclaimed performance Badke, created in 2013 with a cast of Palestinian performers, is now given new life by Palestinian choreographers Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab. Badke(remix) is an explosion of joy and togetherness, an antidote to the harsh reality that shimmers beneath its festive surface.

Dabke is a traditional Palestinian dance typically performed at (wedding) celebrations. Here, it undergoes a fascinating transformation. Drawing on backgrounds in traditional dabke, contemporary dance, Hip Hop, capoeira and circus, the Palestinian performers present a contemporary reimagining of the form. Badke(remix) becomes a vibrant expression of collective belonging despite globalisation, while at the same time voicing a desire to be part of the wider world beyond.

Dive deeper into the performance

On 23.10, you can take part in a workshop prior to the performance. Together with performer Marah Haj from the show, you will learn dabke.

Dancing becomes a point of support, a way to survive. It illustrates life in the Palestinian territories, but also shows the compelling force of national rituals. At the same time, with the latest genocide that the state of Israel is now committing in Gaza, you can also clearly see a “l’histoire se répète” (history repeats itself) pattern in this remix.
