Bartók / Beethoven / Schönberg
During this programme of repertoire, Rosas brings together three early
works by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
De Keersmaeker first ventured into contemporary classical music in 1986 with
Bartók’s string quartet Quartet n°4. In a
choreography of playful and combative
accents, she distils varying rhythmic
movements from Bartók’s complex and
layered pulses and harmonies. In Die
Grosse Fuge (1992) De Keersmaeker goes
in search of a male vocabulary, and the
dancers challenge gravity in an ingenious
group work. The last part, Verklärte Nacht
(1995), is a shamelessly romantic love
story in which the contrasting feelings of
a man and woman are analysed and interpreted in an expressive duet/trio written
to Schönberg’s eponymous music composition. Each of the three works are choreographic answers to historical scores
that reveal De Keersmaeker’s gift for both
abstract and narrative composition.
"Een belevenis van de eerste orde, al was het maar omdat ook hier buitengewone virtuositeit -zoals een horizontale pirouette in de lucht- nooit enkel ‘demonstratie’ is, maar deel uitmaakt van een waanzinnig mooie verbeelding van de muziek."
