Beyond Music is a laboratory for performative sound art and music in spatial context. This second edition will be focusing on the phenomena of the ‘one-man orchestra’, in which one musician plays multiple instruments at the same time via all kinds of constructions and interfaces. As such, Scottish improvisor Sarah Kenchington builds at her farm the most bizarre, semi-mechanical assemblages out of classical instruments, such as violins and a tuba, following the example of Mauricio Kagel’s Zwei Mann Orchester from 1973. The Belgian sound artist Hans Beckers also bumped up against the limits of the classical instrumentarium and creates a collection of machines for Sonitum Voda that sonify water and steam. Lastly, Andreas Trobollowitsch and Klaas Hübner are making use of fans to play respectively two acoustic guitars and a plastic tube. The four artists will be happy to introduce their one-man orchestras.
