Bodies at Work. Pierre Bastin / GRIP (Jan Martens)
Experiment with jumps, repetitions and formations in space - the toolbox of THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER.
This open level workshop is an introduction to Jan Martens' methodology and repertoire through elements from his dance piece “THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER”. Participants experiment with jumps, repetitions, formations in space and the structure of the piece. This fun, physical workout focuses on trying things out in a group and is suitable for all levels. No dance experience required.
Jan Martens' work is fueled by the conviction that every body can communicate, that every body has something to say. This direct communication translates into transparent forms. His work is a free space in which time becomes tangible again and where there is room for observation, emotion and reflection. To achieve this, he does not so much create his own movement language as shape and reuse existing idioms in a new context so that new ideas emerge. In each work, he attempts to redraw the relationship between audience and performer. Read more about his rich trajectory on the GRIP website. GRIP is a dance organisation led by choreographers Femke Gyselinck, Cherish Menzo, Steven Michel and Jan Martens himself.

workshop by Pierre Bastin, voor GRIP / Jan Martens organised with the support of KU Leuven educatieve MA Kunstwetenschappen
Pierre Bastin was born in 1998 in Verviers (Belgium) and is currently living in Brussels. He studied at De! Kunsthumaniora in Antwerp before continuing his studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp where he graduated in 2020. During the final year of the programme, he had the opportunity to participate in the creation of Jan Martens’ piece any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones; as an understudy and took part of the tour. In 2020 Pierre also co-founded the Sidewards collective. Several projects have emerged from their collaboration: different dance performances as well as two editions of Founteinfest, a festival about female pleasure. Pierre also participated on the creation of Tuur Marinus’ piece Th lng gdby. He further worked in 2023 with Vera Tussing in the restaging of The palm of your hand and joined the cast of Exit above by Rosas/ Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. In 2025 Pierre worked on Hacked, a hybrid clusterfuck where film, AI and dance are conflicting one another as described by the maker of the piece, Danielle Huyghe. He is also part of the cast of THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER 2.0, the recreating of Jan Martens’ eponymous performance.
With a big heart for the environment and agriculture, he also wants to make ecology, environmental justice more accessible and understandable within the (cultural) world. After creating After all, a solo performance touching upon those subjects, he made a new duet called Porous, exploring further notions around ecology, social justice and nature, together with Isabella Arboleda. He regularly works with Greenpeace Belgium to implant art and dance in their actions as well.
Pierre is currently supported by Bal special, a nonprofit organisation based in Liège. There he works, teaches and creates together with youngsters from 12 till 22 years old.
