What can a chair teach us about a building – and what can the thickness of a stone wall teach us about comfort?
In this lecture, Christopher and Max of Dyvik Kahlen like to move between two scales of their practice: the design and making of furniture and lights and the mindset this introduces to inhabit buildings in a lightweight and playful manner, and the refurbishment of an old stone building and a glass house where historic construction informs a low-tech approach. Together, these two perspectives reveal the practice’s exploration of comfort and their never-ending search for a building character and construction that is flexible and forgiving.
The architectural practice Dyvik Kahlen, founded by Christopher Dyvik and Max Kahlen in London in 2010, is currently based in Porto and Palma where they explore ways to design and construct, locally and also internationally and research how we all live in and use buildings. Their work embraces in a curious way all scales from urban plans, housing and exhibitions, to furniture and lighting. They are known for pursuing a “slower” and more mindful approach to architecture and urban planning. They document their own working methods and philosophy in books, including the publication Dyvik Kahlen In Practice.

NEW! – the idea that true innovation often stems from rediscovering old knowledge, forgotten materials and overlooked
perspectives.
What do we really mean by ‘new’? Maybe we have experienced it before? Perhaps genuine innovation lies not in the unprecedented, but in rethinking what we have left behind. Not as nostalgia, but as a fresh understanding of knowledge, materials and practices — and how they can reshape what we build, make and think.
