Irrefutable truths have always been suspicious, but in recent years, the truth has made itself very small indeed. Scientists seem to lost track. Journalism threatens to lose its grip on the truth. In times of post-truth, it becomes harder to tell the difference between half truths and whole lies. Truth commissions know that truth is the first victim of war. All over the world, they try to find truth, but their search is undermined in all sorts of ways. And philosophy? In the midst of the truth wars, the temptation exists to retreat in ivory towers, but philosophers keep the truth alive with old and new questions. What is truth? Are there several forms of truth? How do we know what is true? And why do we crave for truth?

French philosopher Didier Eribon kicks off the festival with an opening lecture on how to speak truth about social relations. In the afternoon, there are debates, double talks and lectures with a.o. Roland Breeur, Damiaan Denys, Alicja Gescinska, Ico Maly, Daan Roovers and Sylvia Wenmackers. Paul Cruysberghs hosts a philosophical city walk, and children are invited to try philosophy too. We finish the day with a lecture performance by Sarah Vanhee and the movie Just Mercy, about a young laywer's quest for justice, introduced by Rachida Lamrabet.

The main language of the Philosophy Festival is Dutch.
The only exception is the opening lecture by Didier Eribon (FR/EN) and the panel talk on Truth after mass violence (NL/EN).
