Figures of Speech

Seven dancers and four musicians create a performance about “rhythm.”

Rhythm is everywhere. It underlies our steps, our speech, our emotions. Since ancient times, rhythm has brought people together in collective rituals.

For Figures of Speech, Femke Gyselinck collaborates with her brother and musician Lander Gyselinck. Rhythm is the starting point of the performance, but it is more than a tool for counting steps. Through the idiosyncratic movement accents of the bodies on stage, rhythm becomes a melodic expression. Seven dancers and four musicians move as one, building a shared pulse that is precise and alive. In a time of increasing fragmentation and austerity, this collective creation powerfully reminds us: the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
