Jazz op zondag: Dear Uncle Lennie

Songwriting meets instrumental jazz on gitaar, piano and banjo.

Dear Uncle Lennie, a trio born out of the prolific Brussels jazz scene, experiments with the power of classical songwriting and wordless storytelling through short instrumental forms.

The unusual lineup consists of Benjamin Sauzereau on guitar, Camille-Alban Spreng on prepared mute piano, and Marco Giongrandi on banjo.

On the band’s first album, released by Yolk Records, intimate pieces inspired by haiku poetry created an imaginary world with its own locations and characters.

Their second album, Sister Juniper, out on BMC Records, is a collection of similar snapshots: behind the evocative song titles lies an entire family epic, a mysterious narrative whose chapters have been deliberately mixed up.

The trio touches on numerous traditions and genres, from folk to repetitive minimalist music, jazz and improvised music.
