Jazz op zondag: Elias & Jazbyssina Ethio‑Jazz Band

Rooted in Ethiopia and branching far beyond, Jazbyssinia opens the 2026 Jazz on Sunday series at STUKcafé.

Founded in 2016 by Ethiopian composer and bandleader Elias Mulugeta, the Ethio-jazz band explores Ethiopia’s rich musical traditions within the open space of contemporary jazz. Traditional rhythms, pentatonic melodies, and regional influences merge with improvisation and an international lineup to create a fresh, authentic sound. Under the name Jazbyssinia - a fusion of jazz and Abyssinia - the band presents a contemporary interpretation of Ethio-jazz with a distinct voice of its own.
