Lou Cocody-Valentino – M/A/D/R/A/S

M/A/D/R/A/S is an in situ textile installation made by Lou Cocody-Valentino for STUK Vitrine. Using thread and hand-painted lines, the artist created subtle patterns across translucent layers of fabric, deconstructing the traditional Caribbean "Madras" grid pattern into suspended fragments of color and rhythm. Originating in South India and deeply embedded in Caribbean cultural identity through colonial trade routes and Creole dress traditions, Madras fabric carries histories of migration, adaptation, and hybridity. Rather than presenting the pattern as a fixed surface, Cocody-Valentino dispersed its structure across multiple textile planes. Once suspended in space, the fragmented lines align and dissolve depending on the visitor’s position and gaze.

Playful yet contemplative, M/A/D/R/A/S examines how patterns can hold cultural memory while remaining fluid and unstable.
