Exactly 50 years ago, Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky turned the Cannes Film Festival on its head with the premiere of his film The Holy Mountain, a psychedelic and surrealist movie that over the years became a true cult classic. Funded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, this macabre masterpiece can count illustrious names like Erykah Badu, Marina Abramovic and David Lynch as fans. May also be added to that list: Belgian saxophonist, composer and producer Mattias De Craene, known as frontman of trance-inducing trio MDCIII or as a member of jazz-rock band Nordmann. Solo, De Craene takes a more contemplative and cinematic approach: with saxophone, percussion, tape machines and synthesisers, he creates minimalist and at times ecstatic clouds of sound. On the occasion of the golden anniversary of The Holy Mountain, a 4K restoration was released and De Craene composed a brand new soundtrack, which he will perform live for the occasion. The music was also recently released on the label VIERNULVIER.
‘It's crazy how everything in my life seems to come together for this live soundtrack: tarot, delicious absurdism, depth, cinematography, humour, film music ... A complex maze that describes life in a complexless way. Not only does it seem right up my alley, but it feels like the last two years of my life have literally wriggled their way to the top of ‘The Holy Mountain’. My head, my soul - and therefore my music - come home to this film.’
- Mattias De Craene
