STUCK
The explosive arm movements and expressive poses of waacking as an act of liberation
Waacking, originally written ‘whacking’, has its roots in the 70s in Los Angeles as a dance style of the lgbtqia+ disco scene. At a time when queer people were predominantly invisible and stigmatised, waacking offered them a platform for expression and visibility. The style is characterised by dynamic, accentuated arm movements to the beat of the music. In the performance STUCK, international waacking icon Mounia Nassangar presents five dancers approaching waacking in their own individual ways. Driven by an inner need to express themselves and resist oppression, dance becomes an act of liberation. Constraints are broken down, boundaries blur, and movement becomes a language that reaches beyond words.
