The grassy plains of Araucanía and Patagonia are still home to the Mapuche, an indigenous people from southeastern Chile and southwestern Argentina. Land disputes, cultural discrimination and the struggle for recognition of their rights have tested them - but they have persevered. For Mapuche artist Eli Wewentxu from Gulumapu, the violin is a tool of resistance. He has played the instrument since childhood, but in his practice, Wewentxu has constantly reshaped his relationship to the strings. Breaking through preconceptions about so-called “western” instruments, Wewentxu reinvents the violin in his own way.
