Jonas Vansteenkiste — The city as a strategy (3+)

A surprising installation for dreamers and doers

The city is constantly changing. Roads are constructed, new buildings arise in the city landscape, houses are renovated, parks are redeveloped ... Models bring the city to life. They hint at what a city looked like in the past, or give shape to dreams and plans for the future. What if we gave the models to children and young people? What would our city look like then?

Artist Jonas Vansteenkiste invites young and old around his table where dreams take shape with clay. A malleable material inviting change and evolution.

Jonas Vansteenkiste
(1984, Kortrijk, Belgium)

Artist Jonas Vansteenkiste's practice is defined by spaces. In his installations, videos, sculptures, photography and drawing, he refers to and uses architectural elements, both in their physical and psychological qualities. In this way, he creates 'Denkraumen'; frames within which emotions, thoughts and experiences find a place.

His work was recently exhibited in solo exhibitions at Industry, Brno; Galleri Kronborg, Bergen; CC De Ververij, Ronse; Den Fantastiska Platsen, Stockholm and The Wrong House, Kortrijk. Jonas Vansteenkiste received his Master in Media Art from KASK (2009) and a Manama in arts & design from St-Lucas Antwerp (2016). He is currently head of the Ceramics Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and lives and works between Amsterdam and Kortrijk.
