The Ethereal Paradox
The performance explores what is understood by ‘beauty’ in the past, present, and future.
How we look shapes how we experience the world. Attractiveness opens doors, but ‘pretty privilege’ comes with a downside. Those who fit the ideal beauty standard are often reduced to their appearance. At the same time, young people are increasingly struggling with unrealistic beauty norms – ever more extreme, ever less attainable.
Dancer Zoë Chungong explores what it means to be looked at as a woman in this empowering solo. Three times, she brings a woman into focus in a different era and dance style: from the roaring twenties, through contemporary Hip Hop culture, to a future belonging to virtual forms of beauty. Three times, a body dances in an attempt to shake off the gaze.
