Haunting drones, distorted melodies: British cellist Oliver Coates takes you on a deafening trip along shoegaze, doom metal and classical minimalism.
London-based cellist and composer Oliver Coates moves at the intersection of classical minimalism, ambient drone and doom metal. He has performed music by Pauline Oliveros and Morton Feldman, shared the stage with Radiohead, Mica Levi and Dean Blunt, and released a great deal of music for films and on albums (including on RVNG Intl). He covers his moving cello melodies with a thick layer of effects, hypnotic loops and deep drones. This leads to intense live performances with great physical and emotional impact. In October 2020, Coates released his best studio album to date, Skins n Slime, a trip along distorted cello sounds with a great contribution from Belgium-based artist Malibu.
