What Remains is a story about beginning and ending, about standing at the extreme of a life line, at the point where you begin as a child or where you end as an elder. The poetry of changing as a human being, of making memories and the fear of losing them.
In What Remains, Zoë Demoustier brings together two generations: children at the start of life and older dancers who are leaving life behind. The outcome of this encounter is a physical and dancing game between old and young that exposes the ephemeral body. In a movement language in which roles can be reversed, both are strong in their vulnerability. A child carries his grandparent, an older dancer regains his childlike freedom again; a jumper is put on by the other. Who takes care of whom? In the similarities and differences, they find each other.
On stage are four elderly people, five children and one musician. The children are aged between 8 and 10 and come from different neighbourhoods in Brussels and Flanders. The older generation consists of professional dancers. These dancers embody the forgotten body, the body that should no longer be visible on stage. Who are these people, this forgotten group? Are they forced to stand still because of a changed body?
