Workshop rhythm phase shifting

Understand and experience the phase shifting principle of Steve Reich's music in a playful rhythm workshop.

Come Out from 1966 was Steve Reich's first attempt to explore the concept of phase shifting, using tapes and loops that start in sync and gradually begin to shift apart. The repetition and the play of variations act like an aural magnifying glass: a minimal shift in the music has a maximum effect in experience: from structure to chaos and back again.

Rubén Orio, percussionist with Ictus (a.o.) demonstrates in a simple way how Steve Reich's principle of phase shifting works. Afterwards, you will clap your own phasing patterns as a group.

Rubén Orio

Rubén Orio (Spain) is a musician based in Brussels. His work covers contemporary, experimental and improvisation new music formats. He is a member of ICTUS ensemble in Brussels. He co-founded The Third Guy electric guitar-percussion duo together with Primož Sukič, and FRAMES percussion quartet in Barcelona.

He has been working in multidisciplinary projects, together with artists such as the choreographers Némo Flouret, Meg Stuart, Ula Sickle, Vera Tussing, Jeanne Colin and Joan Català, with photographer Lore Stessel, film maker Mirna Everhard and sound artists Stijn Demeulenaere, Stephan Quix and Hans Roels. He has performed in venues and festivals such as Biennale di Venezia, MaerzMusik Berlin, Festival d’Automne, Opéra de Paris, Festival van Vlaanderen Kortrijk, SPOR festival in Aarhus, OSTRAVA days, or MIXTUR festival in Barcelona.

He currently teaches at the Royal Conservatory of Liège, as assistant teacher and gave several rhythm workshops at P.A.R.T.S dance school.
