Carla Parcianello - Capricciosa

10.02.2025 — 14.02.2025

Residency focusing on developing and closing the solo performance Capricciosa.

The residency will be focused on developing and closing my solo performance Capricciosa. I share with you the synopsis of the piece:

A wrap is rolling.

Heads are rolling

deep down, down, down

Am I hallucinating?

Red was everywhere

spiraling through the purple room

There you sent me —

seven, seven little red birds up my spine.

Capricciosa is a 45-minute dance hallucination with a (dead) body and many, many bloody birds as its centerpiece. We encounter the body of a (wo)man constantly attacked by a storm of birds every time (s)he tries to stand on its feet, and we witness the struggles (s)he faces to reconcile with the situation (s)he finds in.

Will she accept being haunted for life? Will she try to wake up from this day-dream?

The solo is a self-portrait and a form of self-contemplation, utilising Whacking dance to explore the non-binary experience. It reflects the self as a fluid organism—constantly transforming, redefining, and evolving in response to self-judgment and the judgment of the world. It’s just a matter of perception, isn’t it?

Carla Parcianello is an Italian professional dance artist, currently based in Belgium. She trained as a street and club dancer, embracing performance-oriented styles such as Whacking and footwork-based styles such as UK Jazz and House Dance. In addition, she studied rudiments of contemporary dance, in particular Gaga, Flying Low, Instant Composition and Butoh.

After moving to Belgium in 2022, she continued to develop her movement research by deconstructing her club dance experience into an abstract language, which she extended to theater and performance art. Her practice also involves drawing and painting, used as documentation tools for movement practice.

Currently, her interest in choreography has led her to embark on the creation of the solo work Capricciosa, which has received significant support from the City of Leuven, Platform In De Maak, Mestizo Arts Platform, Fabuleus, STUK and Ballet Du Nord CCN & Vous! In addition to her choreographic practice, Carla is also an educator. She integrates her experience in various fields to create an authentic practice rooted in her personal vision. Her work challenges established gender frameworks in her personal practice, as well as in educational and curatorial contexts.
