CHERISH MENZO / GRIP & CAMILO MEJÍA CORTÉS - DARKMATTER

Cherish and Camilo work on the duet DARKMATTER in STUK. Aided by a Distorted Rap Choir they look for ways to remove their bodies - and the daily reality in which they move - from forced perception. That results in a complex conversation they want to have but also transcend - a duality that feeds DARKMATTER too. The performance is set to premiere in May 2022.

DARKMATTER takes inspiration from a.o. post-humanism, where the body is also transcended. Afrofuturism is another reference - looking at science fiction, technology, fantasy etc. from an African or black perspective. The human form becomes something makeable, allowing us to dream, intertwined with a poetic layer inspired by astronomy. With an eye for dark matter and black holes that meet and collide, to bear a new, futuristic and enigmatic body.

Just like in JEZEBEL, Menzo - now with Cortés - stretches her movement language by integrating the Chopped and Screwd method. This is a remix technique from the hip hop world, where the tempo of the music is turned down. It offers the performing body the space to generate new lectures. A ten-piece choir of local performers - the Distorted Rap Choir - accompanies them with alienating rap anthems.

DARKMATTER wants to properly reshuffle our atoms, finding new forms for and ways to watch our body and the complex outside world it relates to.

Cherish Menzo & Camilo Mejía Cortés

Cherish Menzo is choreograaf en danser. Ze woont in Brussel en Amsterdam. In 2013 studeerde ze af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Amsterdam, aan The Urban Contemporary opleiding (JMD). Cherish was te zien in het werk van Lisbeth Gruwez, Jan Martens, Nicole Beutler, naast samenwerkingen met onder anderen Akram Khan, Ula Sickle, Olivier Dubois en Eszter Salamon.

Haar krachtige bewegingstaal komt daarnaast ook tot zijn recht in haar eigen werk dat internationaal toert. In 2016 maakte ze met Nicole Geertruida het duet EFES, gevolgd door
Sorry, But I Feel Slightly Disidentified… (2018), een solo die Benjamin Kahn voor (en met inbreng van) Cherish maakte. In 2018 stond ook LIVE (2018) op het programma, ism muzikant Müşfik Can Müftüoğlu. In 2019 werkte Cherish bij Frascati Producties aan JEZEBEL, een dansvoorstelling geïnspireerd op het fenomeen Video Vixen uit de hip-hop clips van de jaren 90. JEZEBEL werd genomineerd voor de Prijs van de Nederlandse Dansdagen, Amsterdam Fringe en International Bursary Award, de BNG Bank Theaterprijs en geselecteerd voor zowel Het Theaterfestival in Vlaanderen als voor de Nederlandse tegenhanger.

Momenteel zit Cherish in de onderzoeksfase voor haar nieuwe voorstelling DARKMATTER – een duet met Camilo Mejía Cortés [première mei 2022].

Camilo Mejía Cortés is een multidisciplinair kunstenaar geboren in Cali (Colombia). Hij is als autodidact al op jonge leeftijd bezig met muziek en dans. Op 20-jarige leeftijd start hij met een dansopleiding in Barcelona. Zijn interesse voor improvisatie en performance leidde hem vervolgens naar Salzburg waar hij aan SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) studeerde. Tijdens zijn afstudeerjaar werd hij uitgenodigd als gastartiest voor een productie met het Bodhi Project Company en danste hij in de voorstelling Sounds of Trap van Cecilia Bengolea. In Salzburg stond hij ook op de planken in L'incoronazione di Poppea geregisseerd door Jan Lauwers (Salzburg Opera Festival) – met een cast die deels bestond uit SEAD-studenten. Lauwers nodigde Cortés vervolgens uit om deel uit te maken van de cast van meerdere Needcompany-producties: Oorlog en Terpentijn, Isabella’s kamer, Al het goede en Probabilities of Independent Events. Daarnaast speelde hij in 2020 ook in The Sadness (door Ula Sickle). Hij was ook te zien in Draconis Lacrimae, een stuk van Pablo Lilienfeld en Federico Vladimir en in Spheres & Circles van Isaiah Lopaz.
