Frederic Geurts - Double, 2024
Double is a frame in motion. With some imagination, it could be the frame of the white canvas or the fourth wall of the stage. But, it is a structure that wavers, a structure that doubts its own existence in light of other possible ways of being. Just like a dancer, it seeks the limits of gravity. Like a drawing where the first markings are left visible or like the riffs of musicians, it searches within the myriad of possible combinations for what resonates. A wonderful gift for STUK as a House for Dance, Image and Sound.
Double is a permanent work for the STUK Achterplein as part of the 2022-2023 renovation of the site.
With support from and thanks to the Flemish Government, the City of Leuven and KU Leuven, Dirk Jaspaert for the calculations and enthusiasm, Stiel Art Metaalwerken for daring to undertake this project, and the STUK team.
Frederic Geurts
(°1965, Wilrijk, Belgium)
Frederic Geurts' practice is characterised by monumental yet fragile installations in which he explores the limits of gravity and the materiality of his constructions. Geurts places the viewer in, rather than in front of, the artwork and allows both to dialogue with the site-specific context in a total encounter. Between 2005 and 2013 he was a lecturer at the MADfaculty in Hasselt, where he co-developed the research field of art and public space, a cross-over between architecture and art. Frederic Geurts lives and works in Antwerp, and is represented by galerie valerie_traan galleryn.
