Igor Shyshko - Grace

This one-week residency will consist in exploring ideas on Grace for the first time. Igor will be alone in the studio for the first 3 days doing some research, trying some dance material, soundtracks and dramaturgy concept. Then, he will be joined for the last days by Abigail Aleksander to develop further the research of this new creation.

Inspired by Raphael’s The Three Graces, GRACE is a contemporary choreography for three ambiguously gendered bodies that interrogates grace as image, as inheritance, and as an act of resistance.

Drawing on the concept of “queer grace” from contemporary queer theology and philosophy, the work approaches grace as something that emerges precisely where systems fail: where identity breaks, where language falters, where the body exceeds the image meant to contain it. Grace becomes not the maintenance of order, but the possibility that appears in rupture.

Igor Shyshko (1975) is a dancer, performer, researcher and creator, from Belarus. He came to Brussels for training at P.A.R.T.S in 1997. During that period he worked as an assistant for the creation of Drumming by Rosas. He became a permanent part of this dance company for 10 years, where he danced in many choreographies under the artistic direction of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. He also worked as a performer with Akram Kahn, Michèle Noiret, Arco Renz and long-term performer as well as collaborator with Marc Vanrunxt .

In his search for a personal dance language as a creator and choreographer, he created Darling in collaboration with Moya Michael, PrecarryUs with Tale Dolven, and more recently artistic performances such as Malus, The Box ( durational installation - performance) and Spell.
