Belgian electronica jazz duo works on their fourth album and live show in STUK
Schntzl is a Belgian duo making hypervisual music, provocative but friendly. Their music is pop music from a parallel universe, a breakdown of established values but with a penchant for kitsch. Schntzl has come a long way, beginning their journey with jazz/classical-influenced minimalism. On their first albums and EPs, schntzl also drew inspiration from pop and chamber music. Their love for outdated synths resulted in poetic and cinematic miniatures, songs created with an almost childlike simplicity.
Their third album Holiday (2023), marked a bold departure into new territories, incorporating elements into their music from hyperpop and musique concrète reminiscent of Pierre Bastien. In doing so, the two musicians left the claustrophobic jazz framework behind and surprised everyone along the way (including Lefto, Kiosk Radio and Schiev festival).
As they prepare for the release of their upcoming album, they are working on a live show, striking the delicate balance between raw drums (inspired by artists such as Still House Plants, Astrid Sonne and Hudson Mohawke) and hyper-digital synths and electronics (reminiscent of Oneohtrix Point Never, AG Cook, Hannah Diamond and Giant Claw).
In the process, they have left behind the dated synth sounds and acoustic piano of their previous records, venturing into a futuristic sonic landscape that exudes a dark club experience. Thematically and musically, schntzl continues to search for moments of pure childlike simplicity and joy.
