BRUT

Through brutalism, Kinga Jaczewska explores the relationship between the individual and the group, between constraint and freedom

Fed by personal experience, Kinga Jaczewska became fascinated by the literal and figurative meaning of grey within the Western context. She grew interested in the defaults of grey within capitalistic culture, various poetics which come with it as well as its relationship and dependence on expression and colour which she explored in her earlier works such as Grey, Time It Takes or Gabriel. This time, with BRUT, Jaczewska dares to start from more personal and therefore more literal starting point then previously – Brutalism. Brutalism as an architectural genre but also as a social system and ideology that it once represented and which contrasts with the questionable glare of today’s capitalism.

Initially, brutalist forms dominate the dance: angular movements, straight lines, and rotations of 90 or 180 degrees. Slowly, the dancers adopt a freer, faster, and more cheerful style and the choreography unfolds into a colourful, dynamic celebration of simplicity. The three dancers explore the relationship between individual and group, between expression and concrete, between restriction and freedom. In this triumphant ode to the ‘danse brute’, Jaczewska shows how grey has immense depth and in its abstract matter demonstrates the richness of the ‘in-between’, silent, overlooked. While refusing to represent and by calling the ordinary to take a centre stage, she aims to question her own understanding of the spectacular.
