Jazz op zondag: Honey
HONEY: groovy melodies and a rich sound palette with influences from funk, soul and gospel.
HONEY is comprised of Lukas Somers (Yong Yello, SOLAK, Otto Kintet), Gerben Brys on bass (Crazy Men, Ottla, Moonboat), and Olivier Penu (Kel Assouf, Calicos, Bandler Ching, Adja). This instrumental trio formed from a long-standing connection as a rhythm section for various projects.
Groove, simple melodies, and a rich palette of sounds are the building blocks of their musical language. The compositions, which are collectively created through jams, are influenced by Funk, Soul, Jazz, and Gospel: Al Green meets D’Angelo meets Ahmad Jamal.
They have finished a first EP with 5 songs, recorded and mixed by Peter Desmedt at Studio Ledeberg. For this, they also collaborated with American Hammond player Jake Sherman (known from Meshell Ndegeocello, Andrew Bird, Bilal) and Wout Gooris on CP-70, piano, and synths.
A first single “Bossa Dolce” was released on 15th of march, and got a warm welcome.
A second EP is set to be released late 2025 with guests Jozef Dumoulin (Fender Rhodes & piano) and percussionist Sep François.
The new STUK season has arrived, which automatically means a new Jazz on Sunday series at STUKcafé! Last year was full of vibrant jazz energy, and we will continue that trend in the autumn of 2025. The formula remains the same: free jazz concerts (or DJ sets) every Sunday in Leuven's most beautiful café. Every month, you can enjoy two live concerts, a special jazz evening curated by LUCA Jazz, and a DJ set with groovy jazz tunes. The programme is constantly being updated, so keep an eye on the STUK website!
