At first sight, programme, function or use do not seem to be fundamental to Anne Holtrop's work, but through his visual research architecture is unmistakably created. It is not often that architecture succeeds in being substantive in itself, without the need for any realization of a programme or without having a clear primary function in the building. Anne Holtrop creates atmospheres and veils spontaneity in essential forms. Holtrop's work is often regarded as the work of an artist. His search for forms is based on his intuition and touches on the sculptural; a consequence of the pure translation of ideas into the built form.

Holtrop's work is formally experimental. Purity of form and materiality as opposed to ambiguity in meaning characterize the various projects. The apparent coincidence in his architecture is masterful constructed. It is the pure result of a process where different possibilities are worked with without excluding these in the final result. The absence of certain conventions of architectural forms and typologies gives rise to clear spatial experiences. The raison d'être of Studio Anne Holtrop's projects is invariably the space itself. The various works - ranging from models to temporary spaces and buildings - together form an extensive argument of a new kind of architecture which is inextricably linked to its material.

Studio Anne Holtrop is based in Muharraq (Bahrain) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Anne Holtrop studied at HTS in Utrecht and at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. After working for five years for the artist Krijn de Koning, he founded his own architectural firm in 2009. From 2005 to 2013 Holtrop was editor of the architecture magazine Oase and taught at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam and the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio in Switzerland. In 2019 he will be Professor of Architecture and Design at the ETH in Zurich.

MATTER OF ARCHITECTURE

The matter of architecture not only refers to the pragmatic idea of architecture, but also to the added value that is created and felt within what is built. The AUDITORIUM 18/19 lecture series represents a spectrum of architecture and matter as such: what is ‘built’ as a physical materiality, what is ‘not built’ as space, light and time, and ‘the poetic’, ‘the metaphysical’ in search of the essence of architecture. Seven selected speakers bring a comprehensive story.
