The power of minuscule gestures and actions when listening or performing together is a recurrent theme in sound artist Myriam Van Imschoot’s work. In this installation, created with the vocal ensemble Hyoid and collective Walpurgis, this interest finds a stunning new articulation.

newpolyphonies rewired consists of 20 small moving bluetooth speakers. From these common household speakers, various sounds are emitted that, however small and indistinct, come together in all-surrounding landscapes that make you dizzy and crawl under your skin.

On a sonic level, newpolyphonies rewired moves beyond recognition and expectation. Even though the listener might hear the drone of airplanes, the drum of insects or the gliding tones of synths, all sounds come from singers engaging their bodies and voices without technological additions. As boundaries perpetually dissolve between the human, animal and machine, other passages open to fluid coexistences.
