Nina Vanhoenacker

Cellist and composer Nina Vanhoenacker is one of a new generation of Flemish musicians who, despite their classical training, are taking an experimental turn. Think Suzan Peeters, Elisabeth Klinck, Nils Vermeulen, Laura De Jongh, Maya Dhondt — the list goes on. What sets Vanhoenacker apart is that she has one foot in composed music and the other in free improvisation and experimental underground music. Concerts by Vanhoenacker therefore always navigate between performing scores by other composers (like David Fennessy or JP Merz) and self-written and improvised pieces. In both cases, she pushes her instrument to its limits, combining acoustic techniques with electronics in a style that can be either rhythmically exuberant or texturally meditative. Vanhoenacker will perform in the beautiful auditorium of STUK, offering a unique sonic experience in dialogue with the acoustics of this historic wooden university hall.
