Opening Night Body of Work 2025 - Unfolding Fase
The festive opening of the very first Body of Work festival - Unfolding Fase.
The opening night is fully booked, registrations have been closed.
The opening night of Body of Work presents in a nutshell what the festival has to offer over the next two weeks. The chance to (re)discover the work Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich, danced and interpreted by different generations of dancers and unfolded in an exposition. A celebration and exploration of how a classic can continue to move and inspire young and old, dancers and audiences.
On the occasion of the opening, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker herself dances Violin Phase, the solo she created in New York in 1981 and that laid the foundations not only for this piece, but also for her metier and career as a choreographer. In 2024, Fase first entered the repertoire of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. Two dancers from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Jasmine Achtari and Madison Vomastek, are bringing their Piano Phase to STUK. During a workshop, the dance and music students from the Kunsthumaniora Lemmensinstituut delved into the underlying principles of the music and movements of Clapping Music and Violin Phase. On the opening night, they share their own take on the work. Together they form a lineage of dancers who share the work while dancing, enabling it to be continually reborn over the span of more than 40 years.
The expo Unfolding Fase allows the audience to dive deeper into the performance. Through archival materials, video works, photographs, and interviews with dancers from the different generations, one gains insight into the creation, structure, and resonance of the performance.
Finally, we present the film Leuven danst Rosas danst Rosas, in which a few dozen Leuven dancers of various ages and dance backgrounds dance the famous chair scene of Rosas danst Rosas - that other iconic piece from 1983 - at prominent locations in Leuven.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker
In 1980, after studying dance at Mudra School in Brussels and Tisch School of the Arts in New York, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created Asch, her first choreographic work. Two years later came the premiere of Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich. De Keersmaeker established the dance company Rosas in Brussels in 1983, while creating the work Rosas danst Rosas. Since these breakthrough pieces, her choreography has been grounded in a rigorous and prolific exploration of the relationship between dance and music. She has created with Rosas a wide-ranging body of work engaging the musical structures and scores of several periods, from early music to contemporary and popular idioms. Her choreographic practice also draws formal principles from geometry, numerical patterns, the natural world, and social structures to offer a unique perspective on the body’s articulation in space and time. In 1995 De Keersmaeker established the school P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels in association with De Munt/La Monnaie.
Jasmine Achtari
The Swiss Jasmine Achtari studied at the Association pour la formation de Jeunes Danseurs (AFJD) in Lausanne. She completed her dance training in the same city at Rudra, founded by Maurice Béjart, where she danced, among others, his Le Sacre du printemps and Cantate 51. From 2021 to 2023 she danced with IT Dansa, Joven Compañía in Barcelona, where she performed work by amongst others Akram Khan, Alexander Ekman and Cayetano Soto Ramirez. During season 2023-2024, Jasmine Achtari was a dancer in the company of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
Madison Vomastek
Madison Vomastek is a graduate of the inaugural class from the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance under the artistic direction of William Forsythe and Jodie Gates. Upon graduation she joined the 2020 revival of West Side Story on Broadway (New York) choreographed by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and directed by Ivo Van Hove. From 2021 until 2023 she was in the ensemble with Richard Siegal's Ballet of Difference am Schauspiel Köln. Madison Vomastek has also been a guest artist with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Architanz, Gala De Danza, The Guggenheim Museum, Laguna Dance Festival, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Ludwig Museum, Kolumba Museum, Britney X festival, and Muffatwerk Tanz Festival München. Madison Vomastek is also a dance maker and credits her choreographic process to the dance collective BODYSONNET, where she is a collaborator. Since 2023-2024, she has been a member of the company of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
