Performance in Vlaanderen

On the occasion of the Playground Festival, Kunstenpunt organises a public conversation on performance art in Flanders. Katleen Van Langendonck will offer both a historical and contemporary overview of the sector in Flanders and Brussels. Afterwards, the speakers will discuss the challenges currently facing performance art in Flanders.

Katleen Van Langendonck worked at the Kaaitheater, first as a programmer and then as co-artistic director. Among other things, she initiated and coordinated PERFORMATIK, the Brussels biennial for Performance Art. Since January 2020, she has been working at Europalia Arts Festival as coordinator of performing arts and literature, as well as a lecturer in the dance department of the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp.

Elen Braga is a multidisciplinary artist active in the fields of installations, sculpture and public space. Her large-scale installations often involve a performative aspect related to the use of her own sculptures.

Joshua Serafin is a multidisciplinary artist who combines dance, performance, visual arts and choreography. Serafin is VIERNULVIER's resident artist for the 2023-2027 season.

Eliel Jones is the curator of performance and time-based media at KANAL. Prior to KANAL he was the curator of the second edition of the Brent Biennial. Between 2016 and 2021 he held curatorial positions at Chisenhale Gallery and Cell Project Space in London. Jones has written numerous pieces of criticism on contemporary art and performance for various international platforms and publications.

Alice Ciresola is an independent researcher and curator of performance and socially engaged projects, based in Brussels. She holds an MA in Visual and Performing Arts from IUAV University, Venice, and an MA in Exhibition Practices from ARBA-Esa, Brussels. Her research revolves around strategies for reinterpreting tangible and intangible heritage through site-specific art interventions.

The conversation will be moderated by Anna Stoppa, curator and teacher (for example with KASK & Conservatory in Ghent).
