Petrushka, against the image
A radical interpretation of Stravinsky’s Petrushka, revived with AI-generated dance movements.
Petrushka, the iconic 1911 ballet by Igor Stravinsky, tells the haunting tale of a puppet who is brought to life, only to experience love, jealousy, and ultimately death at the hands of another doll.
In a radical reinterpretation, choreographer Michiel Vandevelde breathes new life into Petrushka. This time, Petrushka is a rebellious figure. The choreography, composed of AI-generated dance movements, is gradually pushed to its extremes. What remains of humanity when social interaction has been fully digitised? Only a puppet can show us.
Vandevelde’s glitch- and pop-infused movements and physically demanding choreography results in a hypnotic yet confronting experience.
This performance is connected to the central theme of STUK’s 2026–2027 dance season: algorithms.
For the first time, STUK’s dance programme is built around a common thread running throughout the season. The theme of algorithms recurs across several performances. These performances help us understand what algorithms are and what they do. They not only showcase the latest applications of (digital) algorithms in the arts, but also actively contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding them.
