Each year, STUK, Q-O2, Musica and C-TAKT present a showcase of new sound art in Belgium. Four promising sound artists were selected from an open call: Cis De Gendt, Jacob Eckhardt, Melissa Ryke and Linus Bonduelle. They each had the chance to do a residency, got artistic feedback and will present a new work at STUK during the Showcase Emerging Sound 2025.
This edition includes two installations and two performances. The installations will play continuously in the Ateliers from 19:00 till 22:00.
Australia born, Brussels-based artist Melissa Ryke explores playful ways of embodied listening. In her installation Last Summer's Yield, she evokes the atmosphere of a vibrant urban garden in Brussels using fragile clay sculptures that listeners place against their ears and bodies.
Linus Bonduelle shows an audiovisual installation, inspired by the grey economy of scrap metal collection. With their blaring megaphone and repetitive calls for discarded materials, the scrap collector is an audibly recognisable figure, even though they often operate out of sight. Bonduelle plays with ideas of reuse and revaluation by shifting our attention to our everyday environment.
The two performances are by two Flemish students at the Institute of Sonology in The Hague.
Cis De Gendt is a Belgian artist-organizer who currently resides in The Hague. He is interested in situations that foreground the participatory aspect of listening, often by working with what it means to engage with the recording or performance format. Through the use of playback devices, amplification, sounding objects, space, and performance, he invites the audience to a listening situation informed by how sound and music is embedded in our everyday auditory experience.
Jacob Eckhardt is a sound maker whose works centre around the (mis-)use of various sound media and materials. He is interested in the mundane aspects of how sound and music is mediated across space and time, and likes to consider the cultural conditions of sampling practices. For the showcase, Eckhardt is working on a new installation-performance that expands his turntable practice using a range of sound reproduction technologies and materials.
