THELONIOUS (6+) / Leuven Jazz 2019
A rollercoaster through the life of jazz legend Thelonious Monk, with the musicians of De Beren Gieren.
Mile(s)tones, Zonzo Compagnie’s musical journey through the universe of Miles Davis, was an international hit and toured around the world. With THELONIOUS, the company now created a follow-up focusing on the music and the figure of legendary jazz musician Thelonious Monk.
A drummer, a pianist and a double bass player take you to New York in the first half of the 20th century. Little Thelonious peeks over the shoulder of his older sister playing the piano and becomese fascinated by the instrument. What follows is a rollercoaster of encounters, jam sessions, success and a lot of bad luck. Equally stubborn and genius, Thelonious Monk follows a ragged trajectory filled with aberrant harmonies and awkward rhythms. But in the end, he grew up to become ‘The High Priest of Jazz’, author of numerous jazz standards.
Live music and video pull you into Thelonious story of experimentalism and show every-shifting perspectives. Jump on the bebop train and become Thelonious. With Simon Segers, Fulco Ottervanger and Lieven Van Pée of the adventurous jazz trio De Beren Gieren, recently awarded a Klara Award.
