Chipo Sikumba - Zunda iLanga

04.10.2025 — 19.10.2025

"Zunda iLanga is a theatrical journey that brings African oral tradition to the stage. In the sacred land of Zunda, Anansi, a web-weaving spider, tries not to get caught in a trap of his own making. Through tales that blur the line between fact and fantasy, we travel across time — where past and present are deeply intertwined.

This magical narrative unfolds as a new generation discovers how stories shape who we are and who we may become. With a dynamic blend of Rhythm and Prose, this story breathes life into ancient echoes. Zunda iLanga is a tribute to tales that continue to resonate — from mouth to ear and from heart to heart. Step into a world where words move, and entangle yourself in Anansi’s web.

I don’t know much about theatre but I get the nudge that this space panders either to the ‘old-guard’ or the ‘neo-academic types’. I hope to make this piece accessible to the ‘yout-dem’ and ‘trenchers’ I could pull off the street and they could have a laugh but still have depth for those who wish to dive."

"I am Chipo Sikumba, a Writer/Director taking my first steps into live performance. I was born in Mozambique and I’ve lived in Eswatini, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, and now Belgium. Each place has etched texture onto me which I carry into my work. I have no formal training in the Arts, but I was thrust into the arduous and turbulent artistic journey under the rogue gaze of my beloved and oddly shamanic older brother, Oli. It has been 10years since we departed on this path and I'm still deeply engaged in the creative act, so I guess it's time to drop some heat.

As artifice slowly infiltrates every aspect of our lives, I believe there will be a growing reactionary thirst for raw, live human experience. Theatre sits in a unique position to satiate the void, this makes me excited to play in this arena."
